All contain extracts of Polypodium leucotomos (cabbage palm fern), a plant native to Central America. Like many plants, there are some interesting biological compounds inside. The active ingredients seem to be in the rhizome (rootstalk), and they include calagualine, ecdysone, ecdysterone, and several phenolic compounds that may provide antioxidant effects. There is some preliminary evidence to suggest that these chemicals may reduce oxidative damage caused by UV light. This stuff is awesome. I am not an advocate of commercial sun screen. I use natural sun screen sparingly. I went to Honduras in April and never burned. My dermatologist recommended it (she also recommended sunscreen). Used this all summer....amazing. Previously even with sunscreen, could not be outside long without getting burned. I am a natural blonde with a fair complexion. Love, love, love this stuff.
When used with sunscreen this product works fabulously! We have used it for years, every trip to Cancun, or the beaches in Hawaii, outdoors or around a pool for the day... It works, an no side effects..
